The GUW+ concept was one of five projects honored at the "Deutscher Verkehrswendepreis" (German Transport Transition Prize) awards ceremony hosted by the Allianz pro Schiene. The jury was particularly impressed by the synergies between the e-bus and light rail energy supply systems, as well as the possibility of using used bus batteries in a second-life application for braking energy recovery, peak shaving or blackout reserves.

GUW+ at the AEE meeting of the VDV

March 15, 2023

At the meeting of the Committee for Electrical Energy Systems (AEE) of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), GUW+ was the subject of two presentations. The first presentation introduced the general energy supply concept, the structure, and the ongoing operation of the demonstrator in Hannover-Döhren. The second presentation focused on the software solutions developed within the project for site selection, design, and intelligent functions of the battery storage system. Following the presentations, interested participants had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the GUW+ substation in Hannover-Döhren.

Consortium Meeting, Dresden

February 27-28, 2023
The project partners met for a consortium meeting and workshop in Dresden at the end of February. Topics of the meeting included the current status of the different operation modes of GUW+, as well as the planning of the second cost-neutral project extension until the end of November 2023 with the aim of gaining further knowledge from the regular operation of the demonstrator.

Consortium Meeting, Hannover

December 19-20, 2022
The project partners met in Hannover in December after the components had been completely integrated into the substation and put into service. In addition, the results from the first validations of operation modes and planned test campaigns were presented at the event.

Consortium Meeting, Hannover

June 9 – 10, 2022
Konsortialtreffen Juni 2022

The set-up of the first GUW+ system in Döhren/Hannover is in full progress, and during their consortium meeting in June, the associated partners were able to gain an impression of the facilities.
On the first day of the meeting, the already up-and-running system components were demonstrated, such as the rectifier’s transformer chamber, the DC chamber (HESOP, rectifier, DC switchgear) and the chamber containing the charging technology (separator cabinet, bus charging converters, battery converters). In addition, the battery space holding 28 used traction storage units, a corresponding cooling system, the required fire protection system, as well as the blackout inverter were presented to the partners. The practical highlight of the day was the showcasing of a bus charging process. The meeting’s second day was reserved for project coordination and detailed planning of the testing campaigns.

GUW+ at the dcrps in Leipzig

April 28 - 29, 2022
The concept and construction of the GUW+ in Hanover was presented at the dcrps (international industry meeting for DC railroad power supply) in front of a professional audience of about 400 participants. The idea was well received and the GUW+ was also referred to in previous presentations.

Commissioning GUW+ Hanover Döhren

April 2022

The GUW+ has successfully completed the next step of commissioning. In addition to the light rail in the depot, it now also supplies the light rail on the line. In the same step, the HESOP components were also commissioned (left and center picture). Also encouraging: The e-bus charging tests show that the MuP charging technology works with the eCitaros (right picture).

Consortium meeting Hanover & Salzgitter

July 12 - 13, 2021

After three virtual consortium meetings, the last meeting took place in July in Hanover and Salzgitter. On the first day, there was a site visit of the GUW+, which is still under construction at ÜSTRA in Hanover. For some project participants this was the first opportunity to visit the construction site.

The pictures give an insight into the site visit:

  • west side of the GUW+ building with a view of the transformer chambers
  • HESOP transformer
  • parking spaces provided for the installation of the underfloor contact system
  • charging technology room and battery rooms of the substation

The second part of the consortium meeting took place the next day at Alstom in Salzgitter. The associated partners had the opportunity to participate virtually. The current project progress was presented and the next steps were coordinated.

Construction progress of the substation GUW+ in Hanover Döhren

December 1, 2021

Baufortschritt Dezember 2021

The battery storage system was successfully integrated into the substation by the company MB Energy on behalf of Fraunhofer IVI.

It consists of two strings of 14 used bus traction batteries, which were previously used in test fleets.

The picture shows one of the strings including battery cooling and flue gas removal in the GUW+ Hanover Döhren.

The company building is now almost finished, last remaining works are in progress. The empty pipe route is also almost completed in the relevant area, the handover of the pipe clearances is still pending. The paving work around the building is the last step that will be visible from the outside. A lot has also happened inside: The company Elpro Berlin has already placed the racks in the building, including the HESOP of the company Alstom and also the charging technology of the company M&P. Things will get exciting in mid-August: the first charging mast for this line endpoint will be erected at night (manufactured by the company Masche Metallbau).

The remaining work on the GUW+ building will be completed in the next few days. Inside, the raised floor has already been installed, transformer rails have been mounted in the transformer chambers, and the vinyl has been laid on the reinforced concrete floor in the battery rooms. The equipment with the ventilation technology is also well advanced. As shown in the photo, civil engineering work is still outstanding in the area of the parking lot. Among other things, the last meters of the empty pipe route must be laid to the GUW+. The company Elpro is also already on the construction site and will place the two transformers in the building in week 23.

Construction progress 2021

On March 26th, 2021, the shell of the over 300 m² company building was completed. More than 30 trucks delivered the precast concrete elements over the course of five nights, which were set up during the day. What follows now is work on the interior of the building, the roof and the facade, which is expected to be completed on May 17, 2021.

By 2023, ÜSTRA aims to have 48 electric buses running completely on electric power on all inner-city lines within Hanover's environmental zone. An ambitious goal - CEO Dr. Volkhardt Klöppner, Denise Hain, Director of Operations and Human Resources, and Elke Maria van Zadel, Director of Technology, IT and Infrastructure, explain in the video how this can work. Part of this is our GUW+, which is presented from minute 04:39.
